It-sa’s partner network has welcomed a new member, the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE in Darmstadt, Europe’s largest centre for applied research in cybersecurity. As part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with the participation of the Fraunhofer institutes SIT and IGD and the Technische Universität Darmstadt and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the research centre operates on the basis of a unique collaboration model of university and non-university research. In its current structure, ATHENE emerged in 2019 from CRISP, the former Center for Research in Security and Privacy, and receives funding from the Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the Hessen State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK).
ATHENE-CEO Professor Michael Waidner, Director of the Fraunhofer SIT and professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt: “ATHENE conducts cutting-edge application-driven research to benefit the economy, society and the nation. We are researching and developing new solutions to improve IT security for industry and public administrations and we support business founders and start-ups, for example, with our expert knowledge and experience. As Europe’s leading trade fair for IT security, it-sa is an important platform that enables us to present our security solutions to representatives of industry and public bodies and conduct discussions with them. This dialogue is very important for a research centre whose stated focus is on dealing with real-life, practical issues and problems.”
