Everyday we use Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) without even realising it. Browsing the internet, visiting foreign countries, shopping in the local supermarket – all these activities are enabled via PKIs in the background. PKIs are an established method of building trust as they build a trust anchor for integrity, confidentiality and authentication.
Meanwhile we have the global trend of connecting huge amounts of sensors and devices to the internet and the cloud in order to automate processes, generate insights or deliver functions for end customers. These devices communicate with each other, need software updates or a maintenance access. In order to reduce the risk of potential cyber attacks, these functions should be secured.
The presentation gives a short overview of the function and milestones of Public Key Encryption/ Public Key Infrastructures. The challenges and specific aspects of Internet of Things will be addressed and a potential outlook of the interaction between PKIs and IoT-devices will be given.
