Ransomware has ridden the coattails of coronavirus to new heights. Remote working grew exponentially practically overnight, multiplying the number of exposed RDP ports and other insecure remote access pathways. Privileged access, a core need for many types of malware and ransomware to execute and move laterally, also increased with the surge in remote sessions and the expansion of cloud deployments. Additionally, ransomware creators also used aggressive phishing attacks calculated to prey on people’s fears and hopes.
