The term “Industry 4.0” was first used in 2011 in connection with a German federal government research project and, as is well known, refers to the comprehensive digitization of industrial production. Later, the buzzwords “IoT” and “IIoT” were added.
However, as is so often the case with innovations, the question of how to ensure the robustness and security of this digitization in production was not discussed until later. Often only after “the damage has already been done.”

Particularly in sectors involving sensitive or critical infrastructure – such as the energy sector or the chemical industry – risks, both from cyberattacks and production outages, have increased as a result of digitization initiatives.
