More and more IT organisations want to break free from hyperscaler lock-in. Driven by digital sovereignty, a growing regulatory burden and the desire to regain control over their own data, open-source platforms such as OpenStack are increasingly being considered as a solution. In practice, however, the move often fails due to the same obstacle: a complete lack of experience with open-source infrastructure. The migration is postponed, valuable time is lost, and those who attempt it on their own easily underestimate the risks: misconfigurations, unclear responsibility for patches and CVEs, high investment and operating costs, and a level of security that falls short of what they are used to.
