Digital substations, control centres and power plants generate traffic that conventional IT security tools do not understand. A packet filter sees MMS traffic on port 102 – not that a protection setting group was just switched. Many managers know the result: a system producing alerts nobody can conclusively assess – and a small OT team carrying the load. Evidence obligations under NIS2 and the amended German Energy Industry Act add pressure without adding headcount.
