By 2029, German law (§ 340 (6) SGB V) will require that healthcare providers can obtain a digital, non-card-bound identity in addition to their electronic professional card (HBA). In parallel, the EU's eIDAS 2.0 regulation mandates the rollout of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) from 2027, and the European Health Data Space (EHDS) sets its own requirements for identifying and authenticating healthcare professionals. gematik's current draft concept for a "Digital Healthcare Provider Identity" (eID-LE) positions the EUDI Wallet as the carrier of this new identity — in short, the professional card on a smartphone.
