In an increasingly digitized and mobile world, electronic Identities are the key for daily life operations. Citizens are used to single sign on solutions offered by Single Sign On platforms - Governments, issuer of national IDs and liable in case of abuse intend to keep sovereignty and stay independent in regulated sectors. The OPTIMOS project funded by the German Government aimeds to define an open, decentral and secure mobile electronic Identity infrastructure. The common criteria-certified concept secures sovereignty of governments and allows citizens to store their ID credentials to conduct government- and private services whilst meeting eIDAS level of assurance “substantial/high”. As the concept is based on open standards the German Government intends to leverage the solution via internal standardization bodies.

In light of the smart phone´s role as mobile companion, people are increasingly using electronic identity based services directly via the phone either by issuing new logins inflationary or via Single Sign On services. The latter leads to dependencies and continuously fosters the dominance of SSO platforms. With the OPTIMOS technology an underlying infrastructure is created for eID based ecosystems e.g. SSI for identification, authentication or roles and rights management offered by public & private sector
