There is no doubt that the cloud offers essential advantages both in the private and in the business sector: flexibility, efficiency and reliability. More and more data is being shared via cloud-based platforms.
Document sharing solutions via the cloud, especially from large US providers, have been part of our digital everyday lives for many years.
The basic idea is as simple as it is good. Create an account, upload a file, enter the recipient's e-mail address and share it. The tedious handling of USB sticks or large e-mail attachments is eliminated. Many of the services offer freemium accounts that are financed through cross-selling, upgrading, or advertising.
Thereby the consumer blindly trusts the provider to offer protection against attackers and not to abuse its unique position. Encryption helps with data theft but does not prevent cloud providers from systematically collecting metadata about users, analyzing and using it for their own purposes.
Often, this information is as revealing as data itself. Cloud providers know, for example, which users are connected to each other because they access the same data.
But what about security?
Using a public cloud infrastructure can also bring security risks and compliance challenges. Word has already spread: "If the product itself costs nothing, then the real value lies in the data about users and usage behavior."
In the private sphere, this may possibly still be tolerable. But when it comes to confidential information in everyday business, it becomes critical. Contracts, project data, M&A deal information, official documents, findings, etc. are unfortunately all too often - out of convenience or ignorance regarding the dangers - entrusted to arbitrary service providers whose "general terms and conditions" even explicitly state, that the data may be used for their own purposes.
In the event of theft or misuse, the damage can be immense and affect both private users and companies massively.
