The BDSV represents the interests of the entire German Security and Defence Industry at both the national and international level. Its work aims to preserve the competitiveness and viability of the German Security and Defence Industry.

The BDSV consists of more than 400 members, which are globally operating companies and highly innovative SMEs. Both are privately held and profit-oriented.

The German Fundamental Law as well as the Rules of Procedure of the Federal Government recognize the necessity of federations. Therefore, the consultation of concerned federations is institutionalized in the German political system.
