The problem is that whilst the term ‘system of record’ is well established as a reliable source of data, the ‘system of exchange’ often remains a blind spot – even though it exists in every organisation. It is the often unmanaged sum of all the tools, protocols and processes through which data leaves the organisation.

The ‘System of Exchange’ is nothing new. Whether it’s a carrier pigeon, a fax machine or an AI agent: they are all channels of the same system, just using different technology. Anyone who fails to see why they belong together is turning a blind eye.

And this is precisely where companies go wrong: when compliance is treated as a purely organisational problem.
